Flower calendar

Peak availability for US domestic, field-grown stems, and the months importers usually cover in a major market. Two different questions, so they are two different colors.

Import windows describe a major market with a real wholesale trade, not every town with a flower shop. Check locally before you promise a bride a peony in August.

Notes

  1. Alstroemeria. Greenhouse grown, so effectively always available.
  2. Ammi. Sold as Queen Anne's lace, though the wild plant is a different thing.
  3. Anemone. Also a short second window in late fall.
  4. Anthurium. Grown in Hawaii all year, so the season never really closes.
  5. Carnation. Almost entirely imported.
  6. Chrysanthemum. Greenhouse stems available year round.
  7. Craspedia. Billy balls on most order sheets.
  8. Dahlia. The backbone of late-summer American grown work.
  9. Eryngium. Sold as sea holly, and as thistle by people who should know better.
  10. Hellebore. One of the few field flowers in deep winter.
  11. Hypericum. Bought for the berry, not the flower.
  12. Lilac. Forced Dutch stems cover the winter, at a price.
  13. Nigella. The seed pods sell as well as the flower does.
  14. Orchid, dendrobium. No domestic field season at all. Flown in from Thailand all year.
  15. Peony. The shortest and most wanted window of the year. Chilean stems cover part of the winter.
  16. Protea. Californian in summer, South African for the rest of the year.
  17. Rose, garden. The rose you can buy every week of the year is an imported hybrid tea, not this.
  18. Salal. Cut in the Pacific Northwest and sold as lemon leaf.
  19. Solidago. Goldenrod on the field sheet, solidago on the invoice.
  20. Sweet pea. Travels badly, so imports never really fill the gap.
  21. Tulip. Forced bulbs stretch this back into January.
  22. Waxflower. Californian in spring, Australian later in the year.
